Travel Agents .... Friend or Foe.....Friend

Travel agents business model is to provide a service to travlers that prefer to have travel professionals book their travels.

In todays internet capable world their is a belief that the travel agent can be removed from the travel booking process ..... True Story.

Most people with some computer capabilities can do all the booking with ease. You can also file your own tax tax returns, invest in the stock market and so on.

A real difference is that most travel agents do not charge the consumer for the service.
Travel agents earn a small commission from hotels, car rentals, and activities.

Travel agents belong to associations like IATA (international association of travel agents) and receive a id# that is used when booking to identify them as the commissioned agent.

To get a IATA number you must
  • Have 5 years in the travel business.
  • Current business licence
  • Errors and omissions Insurance
  • General Liability Insurance
  • Be in good standing with customers (no complaints to IATA)
Travel agents work hard to retain you as a client. It is all about the long term not the quick sale. Travel agents are familiar with price points and gain your allegiance by always researching the best deal for your predetermined needs.

Travel agents travel and are generally fun people to hang out with. There is a desire to share these experiance with their clients. It is all about joy.

If there is a problem you have somebody to call.
  • Flight canceled ...call your agent
  • Trouble with hotels, car rentals .... call your agent
  • Lost ... call your agent
  • Is it safe where you are going ....call your agent
  • Health concerns about your destination .... call your agent
  • Looking for a refund ..... call your agent
Customers like to do the internet searches to find where they want to travel and this is a great strategy but I suggest you let a travel professional work the details.
